About Sam Thys: broad curiosity, electronics, woodworking, systems, people, and learning through exploration.
I am broadly curious and always looking to learn something new. I want to understand how things work: technical systems, the physical world, people, and the ideas behind the things we use every day.
My interests do not stay within one field for long. They range from electronics, engineering, automation, and modelling to woodworking, plants, music, baking, and astronomy. What connects them is the same desire to explore an idea, understand the underlying principles, and gain experience by trying things for myself.
Electronics and engineering
Electronics has been a particular interest of mine since I was about twelve. My background is in electronics engineering, and my strongest interest remains hardware—especially analog electronics and the physics that determine how a circuit or system behaves in reality.
For me, engineering is largely about understanding and modelling systems. Mathematics is useful when it helps describe or predict what will happen, but a model still has to remain connected to the real system. I enjoy building simulation models of hardware and other systems, comparing their expected behaviour with reality, and refining my understanding from the differences.
I am also interested in embedded systems, although software itself is not my main passion. What attracts me most in software are the principles used to create understandable and adaptable systems: abstraction, encapsulation, clear interfaces, and design patterns.
Making and woodworking
Woodworking gives me something that electronics often does not: direct physical involvement in the whole process. With electronics, much of the design happens on a computer before the result is manufactured. With wood, I work with the material myself and gradually turn it into a physical object.
I enjoy the combination of thought, creativity, skill, and physical effort involved in making something by hand. When designing furniture, I think not only about whether it functions, but also about its form, how it fits into a room, how it feels, and how it will be used in everyday life.
That interest in making extends beyond furniture. Home projects, automation, tools, bread baking, gardening, and other experiments all offer a chance to learn through direct experience. The result matters, but so does the understanding gained while creating it.
People and leadership
My curiosity also extends to people: how they think, what motivates them, how they make decisions, and why different people respond differently to the same situation.
This naturally connects with my professional role in team and project leadership. I enjoy coaching and supporting people, helping them develop, and guiding them towards their goals. For me, leadership is not mainly about breaking work into steps or imposing structure. It is about understanding people, creating motivation, offering direction, and helping individuals and teams make progress.
How I approach learning
I am analytical and thoughtful, but I am not driven by specialisation for its own sake. I enjoy exploring a subject until I understand its main ideas, can connect it to other knowledge, or can apply it in practice. That often leads me from one area into another and gradually builds a broad view of how different systems and ideas relate.
This website
This website is a collection of that process: knowledge, experiences, projects, experiments, and explorations. Some subjects will be technical, some practical, and some about people or the world more generally. The common thread is curiosity and the desire to learn, understand, make, and share.
